Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie (1993) was produced after the first season of the popular fantasy-adventure, when 14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi was still acting as a “spirit detective,” tracking down evil spirits prowling the human world, rather than the Dark Tournament brawler he became later. Just as he and Kuwabara are about to set a record for punching out rival gang members, Botan carries them off for an emergency assignment. A giant demon has kidnapped Koenma and is demanding King Yama’s golden seal as a ransom. The seal is required to authenticate all divine judgments: if the demon gets it, he can throw the human and spirit worlds into chaos. Aided by Kuwabara, Heie, and Kurama, Yusuke pounds the mochi out of an array of evil demons in a series of Dragon Ball Z-style battles. At just 30 minutes, the “Movie” feels like a lost episode from the broadcast series. The Eizuo Hakusho (1994-1995) music videos combine bits of new animation with repurposed footage from the series; Mu Mu Hakusho is a series of miniature nightmares in which Yusuke dreams he’s married to Botan. Fans of Yu Yu Hakusho will be delighted to get this material, which has never been released in America. However, even the most die-hard fan will recognize that the material is pretty slight–and could easily have fit on one disc. (Rated TV PG: violence, minor profanity) –Charles Solomon
