The concept world music is a vague one that can mean just about anything. Boundaries are simply sounds from a particular place played in a certain way. Unlike politics, the act of labeling is inclusive instead of divisive. It can be Bebel Gilberto’s electro-bossa nova or Tinariwen’s desert blues. Featuring all the nominated songs from the BBC’s Awards, this two-disc/28-song collection fearlessly wanders the world, making stops on nearly every continent. Continuity or thematic unity is tossed out the window–this is just great music. About half the musicians here should be known to American world music fans (the above-mentioned as well as Gotan Project, Ojos De Brujo, Youssou N’Dour, and Khaled), but there are also names that haven’t made it over to this side of the pond (Kaushiki Chakrabarty, Amparanoia and Ivo Papasov). It’s these lesser-known artists that make this collection indispensable, offering us a clue of what artists will hopefully soon make American border crossings. –Tad Hendrickson
